If my presence in history is not neutral, I must accept its political nature as critically as possible. If in reality, I am not in the world simply to adapt to it, but rather to transform it, and if it is not possible to change the world without a certain dream or vision for it, I must make use of every possibility there is not only to speak about my utopia, but also to engage in practices consistent with it. I feel it is essential to underscore, within the scope of my understanding of a human being as a presence in the world, that we, men and women, are a great deal more than beings adaptablt to the objective conditions in which we find ourselves. To the very extent that we become able to recognize our ability to adapt to concreteness in order to better operate, It becomes possible to take responsibility for ourselves as transformer beings." Pedagogy of Indignation
This year was a huge learning curve for me as a first time educator. I have witnessed teachers dehuminizing my kids, teachers as poverty pimps, students not wanting to enter the classroom because they feared the authoritarian that led the class and the capatalistic view of administration. I thought I knew what "empowering students" meant but I took it into another direction a direction that has prevaled, but now having the insight on students empowering themselves I see it in a different perspective. A perspective I need in order for me to be a progressive educator, my students like adults, are easily diverted from tasks that take effort. Therefore they need to discipline themselves to focus their attention on the task at hand. A humanistic appraoch would be great but I need more than that, I need what I call a Human-Authoritarian approach. With this approach I can guide, liberate and create a pedagogical climate in the classroom and at the same time maneuver myself around as the authoritative figure in the room.
